Upcoming Event: Writers’ Day in Abingdon, VA

It’s late July. That means that one of my favorite events is rapidly approaching: Writers’ Day of the Virginia Highlands Festival, which will be held from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon, VA on Friday, July 27.

Yours truly will be leading two workshops at the event and signing books, as well as serving on a publishing panel.

Writers’ Day is a daylong event that includes professional workshops in a variety of genres. I was fortunate enough to be included among the talented authors leading sessions this year, and I couldn’t be more excited. On Friday, I will be leading two writing workshops appropriate for writers in all genres at all levels. While the sessions are geared toward writing for young adults, the information is well-suited for those outside that category, as well.

My first workshop is on Authorial Distance, which will cover how to use tense, point-of-view, and word choice to maintain full control of your characters and the narrative, as a whole. The second involves using our personal and regional history and genealogy to weave our stories.  Finally, I will share the stage with authors Joan Donaldson, Kathy Shearer, and Rita Quillen during our self-publishing panel, which will cover personal goal setting, as well as the writing process, publishing process, distribution, and marketing.

This year’s keynote address will be given by bestselling author Adriana Trigiani, and all authors will be available for book sales and signings at various times throughout the day.

For those who love books and live music, don’t miss the Words and Music Event later that evening at the Heartwood Gallery. I’ll be reading from The Spirit Breather, and there will be plenty of live music and other authors to enjoy!

I hope to see some familiar faces, as well as new ones, at this event! If you can make it, I hope you’ll attend!
